BELLA+CANVAS Hoodie Review: 3719 vs 3729 vs 4719 — Which Fleece Actually Holds Up?
I’ve been working with BELLA+CANVAS for years. I genuinely like them. The color palette is hard to beat in the decorated apparel space and the softness on their fleece is real. But softness isn’t the whole story — and if you’re buying hoodies to decorate and sell, you need the honest version.
So here it is.
The Lightweight Fleece: 3719 and 3739
These are the hoodies most people know. The 3719 full zip and 3739 pullover have been workhorses for lifestyle brands and nonprofits for years. Soft out of the box, retail fit, prints cleanly. In California and warm climates, they make sense.
The honest issue: durability. The lighter fleece pills. Not immediately — but after regular washing it shows up. I’ve taken returns because customers didn’t feel they were getting value at the price point. If you’re selling these as premium merch, you’re taking on some risk.
My workaround: wash inside out, skip the dryer. That preserves the softness and slows the pilling. But that’s a workaround, not a solution — and it’s not a conversation you want to have with every customer.
The Heavyweight Fleece: 4719 and 4739
This is where BELLA+CANVAS actually addressed the gap. The 4719 pullover and 4739 full zip are built at 10 oz — you feel it the second you pick one up. More structure, warmer, holds its shape better. The kind of hoodie someone puts on and immediately knows they got something.
I haven’t run the full durability test on the heavyweight yet — I’m washing mine repeatedly and will report back. But the construction feels more substantial and I expect it to hold up better than the lighter version. The softness is still there. The price point is higher, but it justifies itself in perceived value.
Where Independent Trading Still Wins
This is the comparison most review posts skip. Independent Trading Co. hoodies — the IND4000 in particular — sit at a better price point than BELLA+CANVAS, offer a solid color palette, and in my experience hold up better over time. Less soft out of the box, but more durable where it counts. For organizations buying in volume for staff or events, ITC is usually my first recommendation.
BELLA+CANVAS wins on softness and color range. ITC wins on durability and value. They’re not the same customer.
And Then There’s Bayside
Higher price, limited colors, but built to last. If durability is non-negotiable and budget isn’t the primary constraint, Bayside is worth a look. It’s a different product for a different buyer — I’ll do a full breakdown on Bayside separately.
Next Level Also Has Fleece Worth Knowing
Next Level has some solid fleece options that don’t get enough attention. Softer than ITC, more durable than the lighter BELLA+CANVAS options, and competitively priced. Worth considering if you’re stuck between the two.
The Bottom Line for Decorators
If you’re decorating hoodies for a brand or organization and softness is the priority — BELLA+CANVAS 3719 or 3739 with the inside-out wash instruction. If you want to minimize returns and maximize perceived value — the 4719 or 4739 heavyweight, or ITC. If durability is everything — Bayside.
